During our inaugural season
2004 the Colonial team won only three games on the field, but the Club won many
friends and admirers off the field for its approach to the game.
2005 saw the club field two teams which together won a combined total of 14
matches for the year, and once again the club received a number of plaudits for
the manner in which it played the great game of cricket. The goal we have set
ourselves for the 2006 season, without compromise to our sporting philosophy,
was to have the Colonial A team earn promotion to the A Division of the league.
We narrowly missed that goal, finishing one place away from promotion fro the
second year in succession.
For the 2007 season our goal remains promotion for the A team, while also
ensuring that all players in both teams are able to enjoy their cricket in a
supportive and sporting atmosphere that embodies the spirit of the game.
Although we try our best on the field, we also believe that
the social aspect is a vital part of any club, and this is particularly true at
the Colonial Club. A number of events are scheduled regularly throughout the
year to encourage players, their wives or girlfriends and other supporters to
enjoy one another's company in an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship. To
cite some examples, we start the season off in style with a Curry Night at the
home of one of the players, and after each game during the year we gather to
socialize and reflect on the events of the day as we cool off from the heat of
the Texas sun.
An annual event is the Colonial Golf Day, which takes place
in the lush surrounds of the Gentle Creek Golf Club and which pits our members,
friends and workmates against one another in a friendly social round of golf
followed by dinner and prizes for the good, the bad and the just plain
mediocre. Another popular event is the annual Ladies Day which is held to
acknowledge the contributions of our "Cricket Widows"; on this
occasion we treat our better halves to a day out with lunch, spa treatments and
other such luxuries as are deserved by those ladies who put up with their men
being absent from home nearly every Sunday for 6 months.
We welcome new members - playing or social - who share our
views about the game of cricket and are interested to mix with our eclectic
bunch of nationalities and characters. All are welcome to come and watch us play
on any given weekend - simply click on the Calendar tab on the left of this page
for a schedule and directions to the grounds. Even if you've never played cricket, we
will happily teach you the basics and introduce you to the game we all love.
For those who are more interested in the social aspects, we can assure you of a
memorable experience at the Colonial Cricket and Social Club!
